The Cam, in Fen Ditton.

I was resident in Fen Ditton at the former Caravan site at the Plough Inn, with only two caravans left, in 1960 to 1961.

There were only two ferries, hand propelled, (called grinds) at the time.
One at Chesterton and one at the Plough. The one at the Plough went out of use suddenly at the Head of the River Races, I think, in about 1963.
It was apparently overloaded, and sank!
The authorities wouldn't authorise the ferry to continue....

The Merry Miller II was "born" at Tyrells Boatyard, and took to the water in the first instance to the quay up stream from Jesus Green Lock and down stream from the first bridge, (magdalene street?)

I should have liked to have seen Fen Ditton again, at the 50th anniversary cruise, but I am prevented to because I have a show. Pity, I shall have to make the expedition another time!
